Prototec Graph

From the start of Term 4 Rimu class have been doing Prototec. It is a basic facts maths site.
We have been doing Prototec because we can choose what level of maths we want to do and it also help with our basic facts. Here is the Prototec link, you should give it ago. Prototec

We found an easy way to record our scores; so we made a graph using google drawings it’s a fun and easy way to record our scores. I think I did well with achieving 100% in stage 7 maths; although it did take 6 tries.

My Speech

This term we have been writing persuasive speeches; my persuasive speech was about why we shouldn't be forced to write speeches and why we should get the option instead. This week at school we had a speech competition throughout the school 2-3 students from each year level got to present their speeches.
My favourite speech that was presented yesterday was Shjon's speech, although everyone's speeches were amazing. We had to write speeches because it helps with our writing skills and its part of the writing curriculum. Here is my speech hope you enjoy; comment down in the comment section about how you think I did with presenting.

My First Cantamaths Experience

Cantamaths

On Wednesday the 24th of August 7 students from Rimu and 1 student from Kauri went to Cantamaths, there was 1 Yr 8 team and 1 Yr 7 team. At 4:00pm the Yr 7 teams had to go down from the stands down into the floor area for the runners to choose a table. Shukoor was our Yr 7 team runner; he chose a table that was in the middle of the area. At the end of the 30 minutes they counted the scores and the Yaldhurst Yr 7 team ended up with 20 points, they did really well for their first time.

At 5:00pm the Yr 8 team went down to the floor area for the runner to pick a table. The Yr 8 runner was me - I was the runner and I chose a table on the far left which I thought was a very good idea because I had a slightly shorter distance to run, (well that's what I thought anyway). I thought it was a good idea because I thought we would end up getting more points and it did work, at the end we had a total of 75 points; we bet our school record by 40 points! That’s 8 questions more than last year. Half way through it, someone stopped running in front of me so I had a stubbed toe for 15 minutes and running with a stubbed toe hurts a lot! There was no way to change runners because once you’re a runner you’re always a runner. Here are some photos from the night. This was our Yr 8 team score, here is a photo of our score. This was what our Yr 8 team score was. Here is a photo of our best Yaldhurst score. 1. Score.jpg
Also here is a photo of a team banner that some friends and I made together as part of the Cantamaths display exhibition.

Our Olympic Inquiry

This term our class have started an Olympic inquiry. The first thing we did was take a test on what we already knew about the Olympics on Kahoot and we explored different video clips and things, then we had to think of 50 questions and choose 8 of those 50 questions. From here we will be whittling down to 4. These are my top 8 so far:

1. Why are the Olympics called the Olympics?

2. What is the point of the Olympics?

3. How old is the Olympics?

4. How many countries participate in the Olympics?

5. What drugs affect the Olympics the most?

6. What were the first events at the Olympics?

7. What is the Olympics creator's name?

8. Where was the first Olympics held?

If you can think of any more Olympic related questions tell me in the comments so I can see your ideas. I will be answering these questions throughout the term.

My Term 3 Timetable

This term our school value we are focusing on is being a Responsible Citizen. This means in Term 3 I will be focusing on sticking to my own timetable. This also means that we are getting better at self managing our learning and we will be better with using our time. This is important because later on in life we will hopefully be better at using our time better. What do you think? Any tips?

William Pike Challenge Rock Climbing Journey!

Rock Climbing At CattleStop Crag

On Monday 20th June Rimu Class went rock climbing for the William Pike Challenge Award at Cattlestop Crag. We couldn’t of gone up to rock climbing without Andrea, Tanya, Miss Todd, Mrs Royfee and Miss Blair who provided transport to Mt Pleasant. At first it was very windy and cold but after 10 minutes it was really warm and not windy at all.

When we stopped driving we had to walk the rest of the way down the track to the rock. As we were walking down to the rock we past the abseiling rock, It was really high up. When we got to the climbing rock our instructors asked us what we knew about the William Pike Challenge. Our instructors names were, Steven and Josh. When we first got there I felt excited but also nervous because we were so high up but the view was fantastic. Below us we could see all of Christchurch and the estuary near Redcliffs.

What I enjoyed most was walking the track and climbing the rock as well. I didn’t do the abseiling because I was to afraid to, because we were already high up and we had to climb higher to abseil down the rock. I also didn’t want to walk down a wall backwards.

At the end when we finished climbing we all walked over to the abseiling rock and my sister was still abseiling down, when she got to the bottom of the rock most of the class walked down the track back to the cars. A few of the values that William Pike told us were to have pride in what we had achieved and to also show resilience in climbing. I can see how these values relate to me from previous hockey injuries, and my everyday school life.

100WC (French Statue)

One year ago I went to a french restaurant and saw a person sitting on a bench, I decided to go sit next to him. It turned out that he was a french statue made out of french clay, but I still wanted to have a staring contest, he one but he is a statue. But then he blinked and then he put his arm on the side of the bench. Later that night I decided to break into the restaurant and see what the french statue could do. And when I wasn’t looking he came and stood behind my head.

100WC

100 Word Challenge

One day I was walking back from school and I found big stairs leading into the sky, it was very shiny.
So I decided to climb the stairs up into the puffy clouds, when I reached the top, I saw a herd of pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows, behind the golden gates. A few moments later I traveled over to the golden gates and pushed them open and walked through to see a giant crummy structure in the shape of a donut, It was called donut palace, so I walked in and he said I donut care, “ok bye”

Surfing Video And Surfing Poem

On Monday 21st March the Year 7/8s from Rimu Class went surfing for the day at Sumner Beach. I found standing up on the surfboard was quite hard to do, but when I got use to it, it was quite easy.  Here is my senses poem about my surfing.

I could smell the strong salty air.
I could smell the strong salty water

I could hear the the seagulls chirping for more food.
I could hear the surfboards crashing onto the waves like the sound of an elephant stomping its feet.

I felt light when I took my wetsuit off.
I could feel the waves coming over top of me.

I could see the waves crashing down onto the shore.
I could see seagulls flying high and low.
I could taste the salty water in my mouth.
I could taste the water as if it was french fries.

I could surf the biggest waves.
It felt like I could do anything on the water.

Here is a video of me surfing, I hope you enjoy.

‘Wonder’ - First person point of view

Our writing task last week was to write a short essay explaining what point of view R.J Palacio used when writing ‘Wonder’. We also had to find examples from the text; also I found quotes to back up what we thought. It had to have an introduction, 3 paragraphs and a conclusion. I am really interested in what the characters have to say about August.

I can’t wait to read more. We also had to write a conclusion

‘Wonder’ is a story about a boy who feels ordinary on the inside, but he is always reminded of how different he is by how people respond when they see him. This is R.J Palacio’s first novel and it is written in the first person.

Firstly I think It’s in first person because he says,
‘I know I’m not an ordinary 10 year old kid.’

Secondly I think It’s in first person because he says,
‘I’ve never been to a real school before.

Thirdly I think It’s in first person because he says,
‘I can’t say I didn’t always want to go to school’ because that wouldn’t be exactly true.’

Therefore In ‘Wonder’, Palacio uses the first person point of view to tell the story. The book ‘Wonder’ is written in first person.

Check out my Mihi!

In the first two weeks of school, Rimu class learnt how to create and say our mihi in Māori. This is our introduction to our class and community. We also created a ‘visual mihimihi’ artwork to accompany our speeches. Each visual mihimihi had to have 3 parts to it:

  1. A picture.
  2. Images that represent our culture.
  3. Places of significance to us.

Those of us who spoke clearly, confidently with excellent pronunciation with great visuals and layout
scored well on our rubric. Take a look at my finished mihi and tell us what you think about it.
